Peter D. McCann, MD is the Chair of Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and currently holds the academic title of Professor of Clinical Surgery at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.  Dr. McCann’s practice is strictly limited to orthopedic shoulder and elbow surgery and he participates in the following insurance providers:  Empire BCBS, Oxford, United Healthcare, HIP and Medicare insurances.

Since 2007, Dr. McCann has been recognized in NY Magazine as one of New York Best Doctors as well as New York Super Doctors in the New York Times. Dr. McCann has also been named to the most recent edition of Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctors.  Nationally, US News and World Report honored Dr. McCann as one of the top 1% in Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. McCann joined Beth Israel in 1991 as a founding member of The Insall Scott Kelly Institute (ISK) for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.  At ISK, Dr. McCann was fellowship director, and served in several administrative positions at Beth Israel Medical Center, including Chair, Singer Division Executive Committee, and Associate Chair, Department of Orthopedic Surgery.  Prior to joining Beth Israel, Dr. McCann was attending staff in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and Chief of the Orthopedic Service at Helen Hayes Hospital, a Columbia affiliate.

A native New Yorker, Dr. McCann graduated Phillips Exeter Academy and attended Columbia College, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry in 1975. Following a year working in a research lab at the Sloan-Kettering Institute, he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1976, and received his M.D. degree in 1980.

After completing a surgical internship and second year residency in general surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital, he joined the orthopedic residency staff at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1982, graduating as chief resident in 1985. Following his residency, Dr. McCann completed the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at Columbia under the direction of his mentor, Charles S. Neer II, M.D., who is widely recognized as the father of modern shoulder surgery.

Dr. McCann is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery He is a member of American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the premier international professional society of surgeons dedicated to foster and advance the science and practice of shoulder and elbow care. He is also a member of The American Orthopedic Association, the oldest national orthopedic association in the world, founded in 1887, whose mission is to identify, develop, engage, and recognize leadership to further the art and science of the practice of orthopedic surgery.

Dr. McCann is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and is Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Orthopedics, one of the most widely circulated professional journals in orthopedic surgery with a monthly circulation of 30,000. He has authored nearly fifty articles and chapters in textbooks, and is the co-editor of Sports Medicine, a comprehensive 782-page textbook on sports medicine, currently in its second edition.

Dr. McCann has been involved in clinical, academic, and administrative orthopedic surgery for his entire career and currently limits his practice to shoulder and elbow surgery. Along with fellowship director and partner, Frances Cuomo, M.D., he is a member of the Shoulder and Elbow Service at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and is among the faculty members responsible for teaching our shoulder fellow who participates in the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center.
